“I’m just a bill, yes I’m only a bill, and I’m sittin’ here on Capitol Hill.” We’re all familiar with the Schoolhouse Rock jingle , and I wanted to do this extension activity to further reinforce the variety of bills that pass through our national legislature nearly daily. Here are some bills sponsored by Senator Elissa Slotkin of Michigan.
*Note: Many bills supported by Senator Slotkin are still in Committee. The bills included on this list are some of the ones still In Committee.
Sponsored Bill #1 – Washington, D.C. Admission Act
- This bill was written in support of making Washington, D.C. the 51st state of the Union. It would allow the territory to have a governor and to have representatives in Congress.
Sponsored Bill #2 – Raise the Wage Act of 2025
- This bill was written to gradually increase the federal minimum wage from the current $7.25/hour to $17/hour by 2030. Similar legislation to this act has been passed by the Michigan congress as well as that of many other states, setting a national precedent for an increased minimum wage to increase standard of living and assist families in adjusting to inflation.
Sponsored Bill #3 – Equality Act
- This bill was written, as described on the website BillTrack250, as “a bill to prohibit dicrimination on the basis of sex, gender identity, and sexual orientation, and for other purposes.” It is currently in Committee, and Senator Slotkin supported it.
My reflection on the Equality Act:
First of all, let me start by saying straight-up that this is an AMAZING Bill that should have been passed into law several years, if not decades, ago. I think that equality is something that we take advantage of a lot – if were to have lived, say, 100 years ago, we would think of it in a whole different mindset.
I also think that discrimination is sad. Why do we care about the differences between us and others? Can’t we just get along? I tell myself this each day, but, especially in today’s climate and world, I sadly don’t think this mindset is shared by the entire country.
In general, I think that this bill, which enforces the fact that everyone is equal and has the same rights, is an important step in fostering an even deeper ethos of equality throughout our society. Let’s hope that it becomes a law!
Till next time,
LS
