Chosen area of improvement: participating in civic affairs in an informed, thoughtful, and effective manner

Plan of Action:

Let me start by saying this: I believe that, in order to be the most productive and successful citizen you can be in our society today, you need to be well-educated and informed in how our country works, in matters of community involvement, and in events across the world. Being informed truly helps you set an understanding of the justified and unjustified decisions people (and yourself) make, and they can help you become more civically-adept as a citizen.

I think that, just by working with others as a part of this Fellowship, I have developed a greater understanding of how to participate in civic affairs in a thoughtful and effective matter. It has helped me further understand the necessity for togetherness and unified decisions in our government, and has also made me think about how much we lack respectful dialouge in our legislative areas today. I hope to grow in this disposition by continuing to accept the ideas of other people and not just thinking that one single political party is right all the time.

In the future, I hope to grow in this principle by perhaps bringing up issues important to me to a state representative or city-council member, which hopefully may prompt them to make a well-informed and mannered change to our community. Additionally, I hope to continue to work together with other people to develop unified decisions structured around compromise to do what is right; whether that be in a club or something bigger.

In general, it has always been hard for me to accept compromise. In a political stance, I tend to align with the left of the spectrum, and it’s sometimes hard for me to accept more conservative, hands-off approaches to government. Seeing people in Detroit suffer from poverty has affected this more, I think. However, I hope to further develop an acceptance for the ideas of other people, perhaps by participating as an alumni mentor in this fellowship and therefore gaining the ability to talk to even more people throughout the country, and perhaps just by entering into College and eventually a career. I think that dialogue leads to a broadening idea of acceptance and will make you more comfortable compromising.
