For this entry, I decided to virtually watch the South Lyon Schools Board of Education Meeting from January 13th, 2026. You can find the link here, and can see my reflection included below.
Reflection:
It was really interesting being able to watch this school board meeting! I’ve only been to one so far in its entirety, and that was in 6th grade when I presented on behalf of the Millennium Middle School Tech Helpers, which was a technology assistance club that I ran for all 3 years of my middle school career. It’s a very different experience presenting vs. watching, but I thoroughly enjoyed both and liked them both equally.
Personally, I’ve always thought that the behind-the-scenes of different organizations, such as businesses and school districts, was interesting and exciting, and this was no exception. I’ve had the privelidge of being in charge of multiple organizations throughout my educational career, but I’ve never truly seen the overarching umbrella of the school district in action, and this was a nice experience to see that.
A few highlights from the meeting that I found interesting:
- The Best Buddies program, which runs at the other South Lyon high school (not mine), is truly an amazing thing! It is a program that allows students with autism and other mental disabilities to make friends and come together with their peers at various events throughout the school year. It’s truly an awesome and inspiring thing!
- It was quite the coincidence that I watched this specific board meeting. At this board meeting, my 8th grade Spanish teacher, Mr. David Kilbourn, was appointed the assistant principal of the middle school that I previously attended. It was very interesting and I’m curious to see what he accomplishes.
