For the past 5 years, I have been heavily involved in volunteer opportunities throughout my community, extending from my local Church to my school and beyond. A brief summary of each of the volunteer opportuntiies I participate in is included below, along with an artifact (an image of me volunteering) at the bottom of this post.

Volunteer Location #1 – St. James Church, Novi, Michigan

For 4 years, I have been a Catechist at St. James Catholic Church in Novi, Michigan. I have taught first, second, fourth, and, this year, fifth grade. Classes are held each Sunday for an hour and a half, and, before class occurs, I assist in setup and preparation of materials. Additionally, I am a Lector (reader) at Mass (or church services) on Sundays, and I also assist with general operations on Sundays. During the summer, I assist with technology during the Vacation Bible School program, which spans for an entire workweek during the morning.

Volunteer Location #2 – Abbey Park at Mill River, New Hudson, Michigan

Since I was in seventh grade, I have volunteered at Abbey Park at Mill River, a Senior Living Facility near my home. My position is to assist the residents of Abbey Park with their technology and also to provide their staff members with assistance. In January, I was hired at Abbey Park as a part-time employee, and I work on Mondays and Tuesdays. However, I still frequently volunteer at facility events such as the holiday party.

Volunteer Location #3 – South Lyon Community Schools

As a member of the South Lyon Debate Team, and the President for my high school’s chapter, I do my best to help the Debate team function. Before meets, which occur once monthly on a Monday night, I help set up the “chambers”, or rooms where the debates happen, by placing gavels and other materials in them. After the meets, I help clean up these chambers by reorganizing desks, putting away materials, etc.

Reflection:

I love volunteering. I feel like it gives me a purpose in my community and I enjoy the feeling of helping others. I feel like volunteering has given me lots of experience in how to help others and in how I can be a productive member of society. I also feel that it heavily prepares me for the “real world” when I graduate high school, and I am excited to see how I can continue playing my part in society.

Artifact:

Attached is one of my various technology presentations that I give to Abbey Park residents each Tuesday. Check it out!
